My Little Obsession FAQ

What was the vision and purpose behind this project?
This short film was created by Jewel as an extension of her 2011 university thesis. Feel free to read more on the following page: MLO 2024 Printing: A Letter from the Creator

What is this project rated?
My Little Obsession is suitable for people of all ages. It contains no profanity or mature themes.

What language is this in?
My Little Obsession is entirely in English. It does not include subtitles.

Why is My Little Obsession only available on DVD?
I have received many questions asking why My Little Obsession has not been made available online via VOD (video on demand) or streaming services. The short answer is that VOD services can be extremely costly to run for projects that are not high-budget studio productions, and MLO certainly does not fall into that category. The negligible amount of revenue from a project of this size could not sustain these costs either for the short or long term. Many VOD sites also include terms that claim ownership over the media, as well as hidden costs and fees. It is easy for people to see so many shows and movies on streaming services and assume the process is easy, affordable, and/or that anyone can do it. This simply is not a realistic expectation.

The vast majority of customers since MLO’s debut in 2011, including current customers, have expressed that they enjoy having a physical, tactile copy of the media that they can own forever, unlike what is offered by most streaming platforms. They will never have to re-subscribe or pay to see it again. The very nature of My Little Pony collectors is that they collect things, and many see their copy of MLO as another piece in their collection. Since 2011, it is estimated that more than 98% of DVD’s have never been resold once purchased.

What can I do if I don’t have a DVD player?
DVD’s can be played on devices such as some desktop computers and laptops, PlayStation and Xbox consoles, or using an external USB DVD player available on sites like Amazon for around $10. DVD players can also readily be found at places like thrift stores. MLO is also available for screenings at pony meets and conventions.

Why was MLO a limited release?
MLO was a project I made for my senior thesis while earning my degree in Film and Photography in 2010. While its purpose on paper was to fulfill a graduation requirement, I jumped at the opportunity to more than quintuple the project requirements and see how far I could go with the resources I had. My aim was to share this project with the My Little Pony collecting community that had become such an important part of my life. In my personal view, it is and was in the best interest of that community that this project was never shared with media moguls like Netflix or Amazon, where the exposure to a vast worldwide audience could both potentially exploit our hobby and financially endanger it. MLO is simply a passion project made to be shared among My Little Pony collectors and those they love.

How is the 2024 printing different than the 2011 printing?
The contents of the DVD are exactly the same as the 2011 printing as they are for the 2024 printing. The only changes that have been made is a slight update to the cover and disc artwork.

How much of the history of MLP collectors does this cover?
This project focuses on collectors of the earlier generations of My Little Pony, including those who grew up with it during the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s.
